Michael M. Baden, M.D.

Dr. Michael Baden is a board-certified forensic pathologist who currently serves as co-director of the New York State Police Medicolegal Investigation Unit in addition to pursuing his private practice.

Over his 40-year career, Dr. Baden has been involved as an expert in many cases of international renown, including the examination of the remains of Czar Nicholas and his family, the death of John Belushi, the second autopsy of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, and the autopsies of the victims of TWA Flight 800. He has served as an expert witness in many criminal cases, including the murder trials of O.J. Simpson, Claus Von Bulow and Marlon Brando’s son, Christian.

For 25 years, Dr. Baden worked in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City, two of them as chief medical examiner. He has also served as deputy chief medical examiner for Suffolk County and held professorial appointments at Albert Einstein Medical School, Albany Medical College, New York Law School and John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

During his 12-year affiliation with the New York State Police, Dr. Baden has worked closely with the agency’s Child Abuse and Violent Crime Analysis Unit. He has served as president of the Society of Medical Jurisprudence and vice president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Baden is the author of "Unnatural Death: Confessions of a Medical Examiner" and "Dead Reckoning: The New Science of Catching Killers," and for the past several years has been host of the popular HBO TV show, Autopsy.
